"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [as a judge] than a white male who hasnÂ’t lived that life."
So saith Obama's pick for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor.
So tell me, imagine that I was the nominee (okay stop laughing, I KNOW how amusing that sounds), and as the conservative that I am had said:
"I would hope that a wise Caucasian man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [as a judge] than a Latina female who hasnÂ’t lived that life."
I am POSITIVE I would be (and correctly, in my opinion) be excoriated as both a racist and a misogynist...but Ms. Sotomayer can expound thus all day and be praised as a 'compassionate free thinker' by her fans on the left.
She is further on record as opining that the "appeals court is where policy is made" Oh REALLY Ms Sotomayer? I was always taught that in our system of jurisprudence, policy was made by the Legislature, NOT by the Court.
If you are really interested in forming public policy Ms. Sotomayer, you should be running for the Congress or the Senate, not the Supreme Court.
I admittedly know too little about Sotomayer's views as yet, but that is why there is "advise and consent" in the Senate on Presidential nominees; to discover those views and opinions. I have learned, however, that her record on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is less than stellar, having been overturned on review in roughly 80% of her rulings....just on the face of it, do we really want someone with such a record sitting on the highest court in the land ?
I'm not naive enough to believe that a SCOTUS nominee isn't a political appointment, a President usually picks a candidate in line with his own judicial views, that's part of the privilege of being President; but I would expect that the appointee should at least be very highly qualified, and not be chosen, as I believe she was in this case, just because she was: A. a woman, and B., because she is a Latina; and so constitutes a sop to constituent groups that Obama is seeking to curry more favor with.
Mr. Obama, you ARE the President; it's time you stopped campaigning for the office and start fulfilling the obligations of the office.
